IPT Members Only Event – End Of Life – 6th June 2023 7:00pm
The End of Life Special interest group is co-chaired by Rosanna Ellis and Lauren Macdonald. Some of the most well known psychedelic trials have studied the utility of psychedelics in people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses to treat symptoms of anxiety, depression and existential distress.
Soul midwives, sometimes called death doulas, offer holistic, non-medical support to the dying and their families within the community. In this session, we’ll explore how they and other end-of-life practitioners could support people using psychedelics for end-of-life anxiety, and for grief, including anticipatory grief and the wider pain many are feeling around the state of the planet.
Soul midwife and funeral guide Charlotte Haigh will join us to discuss how her own experiences helped her grow through grief, drew her to work with death and dying, and made her passionate about bringing death-tending back into the community. As co-founder of a climate emergency centre, she’ll also talk about the role of end-of-life practitioners in holding space for collective eco-grief, and how psychedelics could help.
The End of Life Special Interest Group is a place for those who currently work in palliative care and anyone else who is passionate about this area to come together to reflect, discuss and explore what we currently know from the research and other topics including:
- What does a good death mean to you?
- Exploration of themes from qualitative research
- When might psychedelic therapy be helpful for someone with life-threatening disease or terminal illness, and when might it be contraindicated or not appropriate?
- How might psychedelic therapy be integrated into palliative care?
- What are the risks we need to consider?
- Can psychedelics help us to die better?
